Only the University of the Philippines has made it to the global top 200 in at least one of the 30 disciplines covered in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, published at www.topuniversities.com.
The University of the Philippines was ranked among world’s best academic institutions by the QS World University Rankings in London. Specifically, UP achieved a place in the top 151-200 institutions for agriculture and forestry and for environmental science.
University of the Philippines achieved a place in the top 151-200 institutions for agriculture and forestry and for environmental science. No other institutions were able to rank in any of the 30 disciplines, which cover arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.
This is similar to neighbouring Indonesia, where only Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was able to represent the country with a rank of 151-200 in computer science. It is a sharp contrast to other countries in the region, where China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore had a strong showing particularly in engineering and technology disciplines.
The rankings point to numerous world-class faculties in Asia-Pacific and Continental Europe, regions that have traditionally been eclipsed by the US and UK in overall rankings.
Asia accounts for ten of the top 30 institutions in chemical, civil and electrical engineering, and eight in mechanical engineering, showing that several institutions throughout the region can now be considered serious global players.
National University of Singapore makes the global top ten in all five of the engineering and technology disciplines, while Hong Kong accounts for three of the top 20 institutions for computer science: HKUST (11th), HKU (14th), and Chinese University of Hong Kong (18th).
Globally, Harvard remains the best all-round institution, ranking first in 11 of the 30 disciplines, two more than its local rival MIT.
The QS World University Rankings is an annual league table of the top 800 universities in the world. Since 1990, the QS World University Rankings, QS’s innovative research, events, publications and university solutions provide new ways of bringing universities into contact with the best and brightest students worldwide.
