We told you it was Apple silly season. The latest rumor seems almost obvious: The iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 will all feature Touch ID fingerprint sensors.
The information comes from a report out of China that claims the first batch of Touch ID sensors for the next-generation of Apple phones and tablets are already complete.
According to cecb2b.com, a Chinese website focused on the component industry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is providing the fingerprint assembly for Apple.
TSMC is increasingly becoming one of Apple's biggest suppliers. Last July, Apple and TSMC signed a deal for the Taiwanese company to make some of the chips for Apple's products. That deal appears to have been made in part to lessen Apple's reliance on Samsung. Although Apple designs its own chipsets, it relies on Samsung to actually build them. The relationship between the two companies is strained, thanks to the recent unpleasant meetings in court.
A first batch of Touch ID sensors doesn't offer any concrete clues about product release dates, but it's a good reminder that Apple is busy preparing its fall lineup.
Touch ID is one of the signature features on the iPhone 5s. While one could argue that it is more useful on the phone, it only makes sense that the technology would find its way to the iPad. When we asked Apple why the iPad Air didn't have Touch ID, the answer was simple: The iPad team didn't find out about the new feature in time to add the component and software to its design. —Mashable
