GMA News wins Peabody Award for coverage of supertyphoon Yolanda

GMA News earned a prestigious Peabody Award for its coverage of supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

This is the Philippines’ fourth Peabody Award and also the fourth Peabody Award for GMA.

The winners, which were chosen from almost 1,100 entries, are considered the best in electronic media for 2013. Named after George Foster Peabody, this award is considered the broadcasting world's version of the Pulitzer.

The citation for GMA Network on the Peabody site reads:

"Facing logistical challenges and sharing in the national shock in the face of what may have been the most powerful typhoon is history, GMA news teams provided desperately needed spot news coverage and information, gaining strength and perspective as they worked, and followed up with solid reporting on the aftermath, heroic acts and relief efforts."

The Peabody Awards gave out a record number of 46 awards this year, recognizing the best in radio, Internet broadcasting, and television.

The 73rd Annual George Foster Peabody Awards will be hosted this year by Ira Glass. The Peabody statuettes will be formally presented on May 19 at a luncheon ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

Among the other winners for 2013 include Breaking Bad, a TV series depicting the life of chemistry teacher–turned–meth dealer Walter White; and documentaries on Public Broadcast System (PBS) and news reports from BBC World News.

GMA Network previously won Peabody Awards for its investigative reports and documentaries.

In 1999, the Philippines earned its first Peabody because of Jessica Soho's documentaries on the underground "Kidney-for-Sale" business and death sport "Kamao" as well as Jay Taruc’s child labor story on Brigada Siete.

Kara David's I-Witness episode titled "Ambulansiyang de Paa" aired in 2009, bagged another Peabody for depicting how a poor Mangyan community transport their sick.

In last year's edition of the Peabody Awards, Reel Time's "Salat (Bone Dry)" was recognized as one of the recipients for depicting the harsh conditions of malnourished children.
