Thirteen years after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, one woman is still searching for the owner of a wedding photo discovered at Ground Zero.
Elizabeth Stringer Keefe tweeted a scan of the weathered photo out to herTwitter followers on Thursday night and called for others to retweet it. Since then, the photo has been retweeted more than 27,000 times (and counting).
Though Keefe and several of her dedicated friends have posted the image to various social media accounts on Sept. 11 each year since the attacks, she told Mashable, the story has never managed to cut through the clutter. In 2011, she posted the image on the 11th of each month to mark the tragedy's tenth anniversary. But this year, when she shared the image on Twitter, Keefe saw a greater response than ever before; she credited Boston blog Universal Hub with generating interest. So far, Keefe says no one has come forward to claim the image. She is, however, investigating a few potential leads.
The photo came into Keefe's care in October 2001 during a visit to New York. A friend living in New York City during the attacks uncovered the photo in the days following the terrorist attacks, but was planning to move permanently to California. She passed the photo onto Keefe with the request that she do something meaningful with it.
"It's a beautiful, joyful moment captured in time and it was such a contrast to what I saw at Ground Zero, which was still burning when I was there," Keefe said. "So, if it had a relationship to 9/11, I wanted to keep it safe until I could return it to its owner. There's so much beauty and happiness in the photo that I just felt committed to the task."
Mystery solved. After 27,000 retweets of wedding photo found at Ground Zero, the people pictured are identified. All are alive and well. Updated article is here.
