The "cold call Pope" has struck again. This time, Pope Francis surprised the Holy See's employees on Friday by lining up and having lunch at the Vatican's canteen.
"He (Pope Francis) turned up there unexpected shortly after noon much to everybody’s astonishment and after taking a tray and cutlery joined the line with all the employees to be served his lunch," Vatican Radio reported.
The pope "ate pasta without sauce and cod served with grilled tomatoes," according to canteen staff.
"He ate his lunch at a long table alongside a group of various employees," Vatican Radio also said.
Canteen chef Franco Pai'ni said the papal visit was "like a thunderbolt out of the blue."
Vatican Radio said "Pope Francis was introduced to the staff and others there and asked them questions about themselves and their work. Afterwards, he paid them compliments on the quality of the food, gave his blessing and took part in a group photo before leaving."

Over the past months, Pope Francis has made surprise phone calls to people outside the Vatican.
The New York Times reported in September last year that the pope called "to comfort a pregnant Italian woman whose married boyfriend had unsuccessfully pressured her to have an abortion."
The month before that, Pope Francis called Michele Ferri of Pesaro, Italy who had written to the pontiff.
The New York Times said Mr. Ferri initially thought the phone call was a joke.
